During the period from
June 2002 until May 2003 the REA Comet Section received 147 observations
from 15 observers. We had a decrease of 54.6% in number of
registrations (See Report 2001/2002).
This decrease is due to not favorable passages of bright comets in the
Southern Hemisphere. Comet C/2002V1 remained
1 (one) month without being observed, its localization was not favorable
for Brazilian observers. The same thing happened with C/2002X5
that only was observed after its perihelion and even so lost its
brightness very fast. Even C/2002Y1 reached maximum
brightness in a non favorable position for Brazilians and at the present
moment is only visible early in the morning when few observers have
time to observe. Even so it is praise worthy for all the colleagues
that accompanied these 3 comets.
And this year a special gift by
the co-discovery of Comet C/2002Y1 by
our colleague and collaborator Paulo Holvorcem. It was the first time that
a comet received the name of a Brazilian. See details in "Descoberta
de Cometas por Observadores Brasileiros".
